  • Pop-up Choir Workshop

    Come along for a fun two hour workshop where we will learn the a choral arrangement of a Broken Creek song, an evocative folk song and a rip roaring sea shanty.

    No singing experience necessary. In the safety of a group we will learn vocal techniques that will help you feel in touch with your voice and build your confidence singing in parts.

    As an optional bonus, at the end of the workshop you will be a certified member of the 'Broken Creek Chorale' and be invited to join us on stage at a performance.

  • One Tune, Four Ways

    Start with a simple tune on your instrument and discover how transform it four different ways. Broken Creek will take you through how Old-Time, Irish, Scottish and Bluegrass styles can give you a palette of ornaments and grooves to make your tune playing come alive!

    Suitable for all string instruments such as fiddle, banjo, guitar and mandolin

  • Songwriting

    Folk songs are songs of people, places and history. Broken Creek will equip you with songwriting tools to take a story (real or legendary), a place or a slice of history and transform it into an original song.

    You will come away with many ways to play with imagery, melody, rhyme, rhythm and chord progressions to tell your stories.

  • Tune Writing

    A tune can start from many different places - from distilling the melodic essence of existing songs, from a catchy chord progression, a rhythm on the street, a dance or from an image.

    Broken Creek will break down approaches to composing original tunes drawing from diverse global instrumental traditions. By the end of the workshop, you will have developed an original two part tune with variations and ornaments.

  • Round Peak Style Banjo

    Lachlan teaches the basics of melodic clawhammer banjo including double thumbing, drop thumbing, left hand pull-offs and “the cluck” through a classic Fred Cockaham and Tommy Jarrell tune.

  • Altered Tunings

    Altered guitar tunings radically expand the sonic palette of the acoustic guitar, allowing players to find previously unimaginable chord voicings, progression and melodic settings. Lachlan will teach you the tunings, chords and scales within each tuning and how to choose a tuning that best suits your purposes.

    Altered tunings for experienced guitarists: Talroth tuning, Carthy tuning, advanced application of DADGAD, Open D and Open G.
